Everyone knows that the secret to bright, youthful eyes is nothing more than getting enough sleep. But getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep is easier said than done! The reality is that life often gets in the way of getting our much-needed beauty sleep. This means that sometimes we wake up with puffy eyes. To avoid the dreaded “you look tired” comments, here are 5 tips to brighten your eyes and go about your day looking fresh!

De-puff your eyes
First things first, you need to start your eye makeup with a good base. If you’ve woken up with particularly puffy eyes, you will need to de-puff them before putting on makeup. There are plenty of remedies out there to bring down this swelling around your eyes.- Chilled green tea – Soak tea bags in hot water for a couple of minutes before chilling them in the fridge. Once they’re chilled, squeeze out any excess liquid and rest them on your eyes for about 15 minutes.
- Frozen spoon – Stick a spoon in the freezer for a few minutes until they’re ice-cold. The cool metal of the spoon will work almost instantaneously in bringing down your swollen eyes.
- Cucumbers – Place a couple of sliced cucumbers on your eyes to rest for about 15 minutes and just like magic, your eyes will look so much brighter already!
Illuminate with concealer
The age-old trick in hiding those deep dark circles under the eyes is to use a good concealer. Although your instinct might be to put the concealer on top of your eye bags, don’t – it will only highlight them. Instead, draw the concealer in an upside-down triangle shape to brighten up your eyes and to hide any discoloration. Once you’ve applied the concealer in the correct shape, use your ring finger or your favorite beauty blender to dab around your eyes. And finally, once you’ve applied your concealer under your eyes, don’t forget to blend! Blend it with your foundation so that it looks more natural. After following these steps, if you find that the concealer itself just doesn’t cut it for you, try a green concealer to cover up the redness under your eyes.
Make good use of your eyeshadow and eyeliner
If you want to hide your tired eyes, the key thing to keep in mind when applying eye makeup is: keep it light! That means no dark colors or heavy application. And it’s probably best to stay away from putting any makeup on the lower lash line as it will make your eyes look darker. Instead, choose an eyeshadow color that is just a few shades darker than your natural skin tone in order to create some depth for your eyes. Once you’ve applied your eyeshadow, draw a nice, thin line close to your lash line with your eyeliner. This will help to make your eyes stand out in a good way. And if you feel like it, you can even go for a simple cat eye to elongate your eyes.
Add bright eyeliner or highlighter
A quick way to further brighten your eyes is to apply some shimmer. Use a bright eyeliner or a highlighter to widen your eyes and make them pop. Adding highlighter to your eye makeup routine is a great way to make your eyes stand out with that youthful-looking glow. However, no matter how magical and shimmery the product is, it’s important to know exactly where to place the highlighter to get the best results.- In the inner corner of the eyes – By placing a highlighter in this area, you will immediately add brightness to your eyes. Just dab a little bit of shimmer to the inner corner of your eyes and your eyes will instantly pop!
- On the brow bone – Put just a small amount of highlighter at the end of your brow to add dimension. But this doesn’t just highlight the shape of your brows, it also gives you an immediate eye lift if you smudge it out.
- On the waterline – This is where your highlighter pencil will come in handy. Trace a fine line like you would an eyeliner on your waterline. For this, it is best to use a nude color highlighter as the white can be quite harsh. Applying this pencil highlighter on your waterline is a way to open up your eyes instantaneously.

Put on mascara or fake lashes
Now for the final touch! Open up and widen your eyes by putting on your favorite mascara or even better – fake lashes. If you’re opting for mascara, using a curling wand before applying makes a world of difference. After using the curling wand, apply a few coats of mascara on your upper and lower lashes to make your eyes look larger and more awake. However, mascara that is not waterproof easily smudges, but waterproof ones are difficult to remove and are prone to clumping.Alternatively, if you’re going for fake lashes, use magnetic eyelashes to save you some pain. Normal fake lashes can be annoying to apply and the glue can get everywhere, but with magnetic eyelashes, you can enjoy the ease of putting them on and looking fabulous in no time.
